Fair- and Direct-Trade Tour to Kenya and Uganda


Join national WMU president Debby Akerman and WorldCrafts director Andrea Mullins for a fair- and direct-trade tour to visit WorldCrafts artisans in Kenya and Uganda. Tourists will be able to meet the skilled artisans and tour the work sites for eight WorldCrafts artisan groups: Sasa Designs, Home Decor Crafts, Mother Care Handcrafts, Sema Leatherworks, Back to Africa, ChildVoice International, Proverbs 31, and Kanzi.

Tentative Intinerary

October 28

  • Depart USA on flight to Nairobi.
  • October 29

  • Arrive in Nairobi and stay at Hemingways Nairobi Hotel.
  • October 30

  • Spend the day in Nairobi visiting WorldCrafts artisan group Sasa Designs, the Kazuri bead factory, and Marula Studios with lunch at Tamambo Karen Blixen Coffee Garden. In the afternoon visit with WorldCrafts artisan group Home Decor Crafts. Dinner at Carnivore restaurant.

  • Stay at Hemingways Nairobi Hotel.
  • October 31

  • Visit WorldCrafts artisan group Mother Care Handcrafts in Kitui, have a picnic lunch, and then travel to the Mother Care Handcrafts site at Wamunyu.

  • Travel to Machakos for dinner and overnight at Garden Hotel.
  • November 1

  • Depart for Nairobi after breakfast and visit Kitengela Glass on the way.

  • Have lunch at local Nairobi restaurant and visit WorldCrafts artisan group Sema Leatherworks on Thika Road.

  • Stay at Hemingways Nairobi Hotel.
  • November 2

  • After breakfast depart for Lake Naivasha area with lunch at the lodge.

  • Visit with WorldCrafts artisan group Back to Africa.

  • Stay at Naivasha Sopa Lodge.
  • November 3

  • After breakfast, drive to Masai Mara, known as one of Africa's greatest wildlife reserves.

  • Have lunch at Mara Intrepids Camp and then go on a game drive to seek the "Big Five"-lion, leopard, African elephant, African (cape) buffalo, and black rhinoceros.

  • Stay at Mara Intrepids Camp.
  • November 4

  • Spend day in Masai Mara National Reserve and visit a Masai village.

  • Meals and overnight stay at Mara Intrepids Camp.
  • November 5

  • After breakfast, fly to Nairobi and then on to Entebbe.

  • Stay at Cassia Lodge.
  • November 6

  • Drive to Ekitangaala Ranch to visit WorldCrafts artisan group Proverbs 31.

  • Dinner and overnight at Boma Hotel Gulu.
  • November 7

  • After breakfast visit WorldCrafts artisan group ChildVoice International.

  • Travel to Murchison Falls National Park through Pakwach to Paraa Safari Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
  • Novmeber 8

  • Early morning game drive on the northern bank of Murchison Falls National Park.

  • Afternoon cruise on the Nile River.

  • Stay at Paraa Safari Lodge.
  • Novmeber 9

  • Spend morning chimpanzee tracking in Kaniyo Pabidi Forest.

  • Proceed to Kampala and stay at Cassia Lodge.
  • Novmeber 10

  • Spend morning chimpanzee tracking in Kaniyo Pabidi Forest.

  • Visit a Uganda Crafts 2000 LTD and then travel to Marije-Gayaza Road to visit a school supported by WorldCrafts artisan group Kanzi.

  • Visit WorldCrafts artisan group Kanzi and then travel to the Dewe School of Art.

  • Overnight flight back to the US.
  • Novmeber 13

  • Arrive back in the USA and continue to hometowns.
